Part of Long Night of Spiders

Teenagers prone to dodgy behavior and delinquency are ordered to go on a therapeutic forest retreat, where they find not so much themselves but cattle-sized ticks that hunt them as prey. Underrated genre craftsman Tony Randel breathes new life into the good old creature feature with this splendidly accomplished video-store fare. Produced by the swashbuckling Brian Yuzna and starring a young, arachnid-fighting Seth Green, Ticks is a little-known feel-good feast with wonderfully disgusting and, of course, completely analog monster effects. Tony Randel
Randel, Tony is a director and editor whose big break came when he directed Hellbound: Hellraiser II (1988; he was an editor on Clive Barker’s original). He made a string of horror movies in the early 1990s, including Children of the Night, Amityville 1992, and Ticks. In 1996, he revisited animal horror with Rattled. Concentrating on his editing career in recent decades, the 2010s saw him direct more family-oriented fantasy fare.
