Australian artist duo Soda Jerk a.k.a. Dan and Dominique Angeloro, has lived in the United States since 2012 and specializes in sample-based films. In Hello Dankness, the siblings intercut scenes from hundreds of pop-cultural classics, contemporary films, and TV shows as well as real news footage to create a whacked-out and poignant narrative about the political goings-on in the US between 2016 and 2021. Excerpts from The ’Burbs, Home Alone, and Annie interweave with snippets from Zombieland and Euphoria to yield an orchestrated satire with musical-comedy allures that come strangely close to the real-life grotesqueries surrounding Trump and Covid-19. Soda Jerk
Soda Jerk are Dominique and Dan Angeloro, an artist duo who deal with the politics of images and make sample-based films with a rogue documentary impulse. Formed in Sydney in 2002, the siblings have been based in New York since 2012. Prior to Hello Dankness, which had its international premiere at the 2023 Berlinale, their best-known work was probably the controversially satirical Terror Nullius, which was both disowned by its commissioning body as “un-Australian” and named one of the best Australian movies of the decade by The Guardian.
