At SLASH, we have a complicated relationship with death—horror, fear, fascination, and occasionally we allow ourselves to have a little fun with it. We’ve learned that it’s hard to trick the Grim Reaper – unless you take advantage of his surprisingly bureaucratic workflow. Death might also bring the opportunity for a fresh start and to free yourself from outdated ways of thinking. While we wait for our great departure, we’re often confronted with the horrors of everyday life, which can be harder to bear than the inevitability of death. Trapped in the web of privilege and disparity that entangles our society, we’re forced to play by the rules of life’s cruel variant of Monopoly, in which the haves are pitted against the have-nots and we’re willing to pay almost any price to fit in. From the day we’re born, we try to exorcize the haunting specter of systemic oppression; a struggle that can take us to unexpected, violent extremes, when all we really want is to be recognized and respected for who we are.
