Toward the end of World War II, as the Japanese occupation of the Philippines draws to a close, a formerly wealthy family struggles for its survival. Languishing in their dilapidated palace-like mansion, the sick mother sends her two children to look for food in the forest. The girl, Tala, finds a fairy who promises them relief but pursues a much more sinister plan. Kenneth Dagatan’s In My Mother’s Skin is a visually stunning mix of dark fairy tale and folk horror, punctuated by drastic violence that discharges against a historical background. (mk)
