In the middle part of Norbert Pfaffenbichler’s 2551 trilogy, the ape man who lost a child in the first movie sets out in search of said child. He wanders through a hellish subterranean labyrinth of caves populated by grotesque figures having a field day in unholy rituals of gorgeously choreographed brawls and the titular orgy that’s truly a monstrous thing to behold. The Orgy of the Damned invokes genuine underground movie magic, while at the same time resurrecting it as a transgressive experience bordering on the romantic—unearthed from the bowels of early (silent) cinema. Perhaps the best Austrian film of the year. (mk)
