Kaleb lives with his sister in a suburban housing development. Exotic animals are his passion. One day he discovers a gigantic venomous spider, and promptly buys it for his collection. The eight-legged critter escapes, and soon the building is overrun by aggressive, deadly arachnids. A glorious incantation of classic animal horror cinema, Vermin is the feature debut of Sébastien Vaniček, intelligently and subversively set on the home turf of underprivileged youngsters. Arachnophobes beware—the movie was also shot with real spiders. (mk)
