Under the sea, it looks—at least in this joyful, animated Chinese adventure—a bit like the characters and locations from Studio Ghibli have been drowned in it. Little Shenxiu finds herself in this world after a storm swept her off a cruise ship. Together with Nanhe, the chef of a deep-sea restaurant, she seeks out the mythical creature Hyjinx. The creature is supposed to help her find her mother, who has disappeared since the parents got separated. Bathed in impressionistic watercolor aesthetics, Deep Sea—especially its 3D version—is one of the most visually stunning movies in a long while. (mk)
